USCIS will begin applying a new naturalization civics test to applicants who file after December 1, 2020. Everyone whose case was filed prior to this date will take the 2008 version of the civics test.

The old test required applicants to answer 6 out of 10 questions correctly. The questions were selected out from a pool of 100 questions. If you filed prior to December 1, 2020, you can use the following link to study for your test. The test is an oral test in which the officer asks the applicant questions.

The new test, is also an oral test, and the officer will ask a total of 20 questions from the list of 128 possible questions. You must answer 12 out of 20 questions to pass the new naturalization test. Free study materials provided by USCIS can be found here.

For applicants 65 years of age or older who have lived in the US as lawful permanent residents for 20 years or more, there is a possible 20 questions and the exam can be taken in the language of the applicant’s choice.
