November Immigration Checklist: What Families Should Know Before the Holiday Season

Jarrett & Price, LLC — Immigration Practice

November brings family gatherings, travel plans, postal delays, and USCIS closures — all of which can affect immigration cases if you aren’t prepared. Whether you’re working on a marriage-based case, naturalization, DACA renewal, or consular processing, this month is an ideal time to stay organized and avoid setbacks.

Here’s a practical November checklist to help immigration families stay on track.

1. Confirm Your Address With USCIS Before Holiday Mail Delays

USCIS does not pause notices because it’s Thanksgiving season. Interview Letters, Biometrics Appointments, RFEs, and EAD approvals can arrive any time.

Before November 15:
✔ Verify your address on file
✔ Update USCIS if you’ve moved
✔ Notify your attorney of any changes

A missed notice can delay a case by months.

2. Check the Validity of Your Work Permit (EAD) and Travel Authorization

Before traveling or hosting family:

  • Make sure your EAD is not close to expiration

  • If filing for renewal, submit early to avoid gaps

  • Do NOT leave the U.S. without approved Advance Parole

Holiday travel is tempting, but one mistake can jeopardize your case.

3. Use Family Gatherings to Collect Missing Evidence

Thanksgiving is one of the best opportunities of the year to gather documents that cases often require:

  • Family photos

  • Civil documents (birth certificates, marriage certificates, passports)

  • Proof of shared residency

  • Joint accounts or bills for marriage-based cases

  • Updated financial information for I-864 affidavits

If relatives from abroad are joining, it’s a great time to get updated multi-year photos for spousal or fiancé(e) cases.

4. Respond Quickly to Any USCIS Notice Received in November

Even if you’re traveling:

  • RFEs

  • Interview Notices

  • Biometrics Appointments

  • Transfer Notices

  • Approval Letters

All still require action. USCIS deadlines do not extend for holidays, family visits, or travel.

If you receive a notice while you’re out of town, contact us immediately so we can help determine the best next step.

5. Don’t Delay Case Preparation Just Because It’s Holiday Season

Many families push immigration tasks to “after the holidays,” but November and December can be smart months to:

  • Start naturalization (N-400)

  • File I-130 petitions

  • Submit work permit renewals

  • Begin evidence-gathering

  • Update addresses or employer info

  • Respond to pending RFEs

Getting started now helps avoid the busy January filing rush.

6. A Short Thanksgiving Reminder

Thanksgiving is a time for family — and for many of our clients, reuniting or stabilizing their family is the reason they’re pursuing immigration relief in the first place. Staying prepared this month protects your progress and keeps your case moving through the holidays.

Jarrett & Price represents immigration clients nationwide. If you need help with your case or want to start one before the year ends, we’re here to assist.
